For
centuries Pune, situated 170 kms south of Mumbai, has been the cultural
capital of Maharashtra. The city was one of the pivotal bases of the 17th
century. Maratha leader, Chhatrapati Shivaji, was born at Shivneri fort
which, along with the 1,290-metre high Sinhagad fort stand testimony to
this glorious era. How to get to Pune By
air: Pune airport is 12 kms from the city. By
rail: Mumbai-Pune (CR) 192 kms. Madras-Pune (SCR) 1,088 kms. By
road: Mumbai-Pune 170 kms. Nashik-Pune 209 kms. Aurangabad-Pune 230 kms. Restaurants and Bars Generally
open from 7 A M to 3 P M & 7 P M to 11.30 P M. There is a tourist
information counter at the railway station but it basically only sells
tickets for the MTDC city bus tours and to Mahabaleshwar. The tours also
leave from outside the station. The regional tourist office is in the
government offices, known as Central buildings. |
