Pune

For centuries Pune, situated 170 kms south of Mumbai, has been the cultural capital of Maharashtra. The city was one of the pivotal bases of the 17th century. Maratha leader, Chhatrapati Shivaji, was born at Shivneri fort which, along with the 1,290-metre high Sinhagad fort stand testimony to this glorious era.  Under the Peshwas, prime ministers of the Chhatrapati, Pune became the seat of power. The Peshwas were noted patrons of the arts and enriched the city with temples, gardens and educational institutions. It was here that Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak introduced the principle of Swadeshi during the freedom movement. He united people by transforming Ganesh Chaturthi from a household event into a grand festival in which the community participated en masse.Pune has moved gracefully from the past into the present and today has become one of India's modern metropolitan cities.
